He then completed a six-month rhythm of weekday fasting and overnight Friday prayer, finding the body adapts and fasting becomes a “tool” for intimacy with God. Bill recounts a later 40+ day fast in China, connected to repentance for ancestors’ involvement in the opium trade, during which he felt sustained and did not lose weight. Now on day 40 of another fast, he’s pressing for resolution in two struggling companies, emphasizing relational “investments,” joy, worship, and spiritual warfare over blaming people.

Stephanie and Armando Rojas shifted from traditional missions to business-driven impact in Africa. In the last episode, they shared how they initially aimed for missional NGO work in Somalia, but felt guided to a more strategic approach, exploring business opportunities to create sustainable change.

They chose Ethiopia for its entrepreneurial ecosystem, spent two years praying and preparing. Meanwhile, they started businesses in Costa Rica to fund their mission. Overcoming the $85,000 startup requirements in Ethiopia, as well as legal hurdles and bureaucracy, they relied on faith, persistence, and flexibility.

Stephanie became the first foreign female architect registered locally in Ethiopia. Their story shows how God can use personal skills in unexpected ways to serve His kingdom.

SEVI: Revolutionizing Small Shop Financing in Africa

Sevi allows them to purchase on credit, benefiting from bulk discounts and deliveries, which improves their efficiency and profitability.

Walter blends technology with personal relationships, leveraging local salespeople to build trust with shop owners before introducing them to Sevi's platform. The business model has been successful in reducing default rates and offering ethical, low-interest loans, as opposed to informal and unjust lending systems.

Matt felt a calling to plant churches early in life, but church planting proved financially difficult, leading him to venture into business. He started a roofing company, which grew rapidly. Eventually, he expanded into custom home building.

Yet he felt God wouldn’t let him stop the business and grew in his conviction that God doesn’t want a divide between church and business. God’s Hand in Business: A Vision for Kingdom Impact in Iraq

Hana is a business owner in Iraq. He has a desire to create networks of Christian entrepreneurs in his home country, and to develop projects that provide jobs and support ministries. In this podcast he shares his journey into business.

Hana was raised in a Catholic family and experienced a profound transformation when he was eighteen years old. He started his business in 2018 after working for many years in non-profits. His journey from employee to business owner was challenging, particularly due to his internal struggle with transitioning from the non-profit to for-profit mindset. Over time, he realized the value of business in serving society, especially through job creation, and shifted his perspective on the role of business in God's kingdom.

His company, which focuses on consulting and business development, now employs 12 people. He experienced changed lives in his company, and emphasizes the importance of providing job opportunities and how businesses can serve the community. Therefore, one of his goals is to open a hotel, provide job opportunities, and fund other projects.

Because, besides helping farmers economically, they also seek ways to share their Christian faith. Their mission is not just to grow a business but to bring lasting change to the community.

Their goal is to increase the number of farmers from 250 to 1,000, improving their livelihoods by helping them grow coffee, earn a steady income, and access education and healthcare. While the project is a business, its core mission is to provide jobs and social justice. Eric brings a background in financial management, and Annebeth specializes in sustainable investing, both of which they plan to apply to make the business more sustainable.

'For the past fifteen years, we've operated as a research and development firm,' Arun explains. 'Now, we're close to market entry and preparing to deliver our products to the vulnerable communities in malaria-endemic countries. That's where the rubber meets the road.'

During our first podcast with Arun in June 2023, he recounted how he and his current business partner created their first malaria net at his home in 2010. Since our conversation, a year and a half has passed, and his team and office have doubled in size. From Abandonment to Leadership: Lina's Transformation

Bill shares the amazing story of Lina, a disabled girl literally thrown away by her family, whom Bill met when she was eight years old. Over the years, he felt God nudging him to keep visiting her. It wasn’t always easy to stay in contact with her. Presently, Lina is in her forties and running their company in China. “From start to finish, it was Him going after Lina,” recalls Bill. “I felt a tug on my shirt that afternoon in that alley. I looked down and saw Lina. What if I hadn’t noticed? We better be attentive to those small nudges since God needs a vessel.” This is an example of building Kingdom Culture. “People are of eternal value; profit is temporary. We do put profit into building up our staff,” shares Bill.

Sewing Hope: Ana’s Social Business Mission Across Continents

Ana grew up in Nicaragua, surrounded by her mother’s sewing machines and design patterns. She was deeply moved by the sight of marginalized and abused women searching through garbage cans for anything useful. In her home country, she started using her skills in entrepreneurship and design to develop a social business aimed at providing work for marginalized women to restore their dignity through providing work; while working with them, loving them and sharing Christ's message she saw restoration while her business grew. Political unrest eventually brought her to Canada.

Nowadays, Ana has started a social business in cooperation with her local church, Tenth Church in Vancouver. She involves business people from the church, as well as from outside the church, to support social businesses around the globe (in Cambodia, Mexico, and Africa) that work with marginalized women. They provide support in areas such as leadership, marketing, sales, design, and other business or spiritual-related issues. In the meantime, other churches have also shown interest.

“I measure my decisions by the 400-year rule,” Bill Job shares in this podcast. “I imagine: how will I look back on my decision 400 years from now? After 1,5 years of a faulty production process and hardly any sales, he decided to take responsibility for leadership. Even though the factory was losing money, he felt the Lord, the Owner, didn't want him to stop. He shares about his interaction with the Lord in this situation, like spending a few days and nights in the facility, worshiping, seeking, and enjoying the Lord.

This example shows that overcoming challenges isn't about ‘becoming successful’ but can be an opportunity to deepen the relationship with the Lord.

The Story of Dordrecht's Urban Hostel-Monastery (Stadsklooster Dordt)

"Both business and mission will increase here," shares Erwin Wietses, the visionary behind a modern Urban Hostel-Monastery' (Stadsklooster): a design hostel, hotel, and restaurant, complete with a chapel. With the integration of business and ministry in mind, a beautiful historical building in downtown Dordrecht has undergone a total transformation. Together with his team-mate Rob Veenstra, Erwin shares how the concept started and evolved. Both have a background in youth work and prayer ministry in the city. Prior to launching this hostel-monastery, they gained experience in integrating business and mission through building a prayer community while utilizing the rented church-building for events and concerts.

Now, they manage a substantial business, facing monthly rent payments and overseeing twenty staff members to run the place. The journey toward this venture has not been without challenges. Erwin and Rob reflect on the lessons learned and the pressures involved. "Pressure grows the root system of a tree," says Rob. During their journey they embraced the motto: 'striving free & presence-based’.

Trailblazers of BAM: Hans Hamoen and Bill Job

In this episode Gea and Bill engage in a conversation with Hans Hamoen, a businessman in his seventies, and still ‘on a mission’. He is involved in various Central Asian countries, but his journey began four decades ago as a Bible smuggler, using his trading business to transport Bibles from the Netherlands into communist countries. Witnessing incredible manifestations of God and experiencing miraculous provisions has significantly contributed to building faith and courage in his life. Even though he assures that this hasn’t been the case all the time: ““As in natural life, also in our spiritual life, we should mature from childhood where our parents take care of everything to a stage of adulthood, where we are expected to be able to make decisions ourselves. Including making mistakes, and learning from them!”

Hans and Bill share about the evolvement of the Business as Mission movement globally over the past decades, and presently also see local BAM networks emerge. Both are seasoned BAM veterans, and they, as Westerners, initiated businesses in foreign countries, as Hans states: “I am called to bring hope.” Both men though, underscore the importance of an equal playing field and honoring the local businesspeople. And to help, encourage and support them to engage with Business as Mission. They perceive this as a promising development and a pathway forward for the future.

Harmen van der Laan: Building Bridges through Social Entrepreneurship

In this episode we talk with social entrepreneur Harmen van der Laan, who is very engaged in his neighborhood – a multicultural area in Delft, The Netherlands. His engagement led him to start a printing business. It is Harmen’s experience that a business can be a great way to build meaningful relationships. He has chosen to be transparent about the daily challenges he encounters as the owner, stating: “My vulnerability gives them permission to also share about their own struggles.” Harmen adds, “The result is an open, family-like culture.”

For those with a similar desire, Harmen encourages them not to hesitate and to step out of their comfort zones: “There is no guarantee of success, but if you have a longing, start! What is there to lose? It will build character, your relationship with God and you will have lots of stories!”

In such a culture, sharing about faith comes naturally. They experience Harmen’s relationship with God, for example when a machine breaks down at an inconvenient time, that he prays to ask the Lord for help. One team member, who began following Jesus, confided in Harmen about experiencing more of God at work than on Sundays at church. Harmen reflects, "It moved me to tears. I'm not against meetings, but this was the whole purpose of starting this business: that people would experience God in the business, at work.”

Does God have a personality? Bill Job shares how he was one day confronted by God with this question. He had learned in seminary about God’s character but had never considered what God's personality would be like. This question set him on a journey that helped him gain a deeper understanding of beautiful aspects of God's personality. It made him delight in God and desire to develop a relationship with Him.

Bill Job and Gea Gort also address the role of awe in our relationship with God. Bill shares some of his experiences in this area but explains why awe shouldn't be the default state in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Intimacy involves trust and opening ourselves up, whereas awe, perhaps unintentionally, may serve as a way to keep God at a distance. Nurturing an intimate partnership with God makes it natural to grant Him access to every aspect of our lives, including everything within and around our businesses, as we recognize Him as the rightful Owner.
