LegalThings is a software company focusing on automating, digitizing and modernizing the legal industry. We provide a full suite of legal software solutions to multinationals, corporates, governments and law firms. It differentiates itself by providing a flexible solution through the use of Finite State Machines and depending on Blockchain technology to provide legitimize. The company was founded in 2014 as a platform to create, share and sign legal contracts. In the year after LegalThings developed a way to describe processes as a Finite State Machine, making complex processes clearly understandable for both humans (as FSM processes can be visualized like flowcharts) and computers, so it can be used for automation. Since 2016 the company is working on a solution to digitize laws and agreements, incorporating the blockchain. By doing LegalThings beliefs it can cut down on bureaucracy, while mitigating fraud and corruption. First, the company explored different methods of providing proof of signed documents. While other parties relied on trust and certifications, LegalThings wanted a better solution, and started using the blockchain for proof of existence of signed contracts. During the blockchain hackathon organized by the Dutch ministry of Justice and Security in September 2017, the company demonstrated that a whole law can be digitized as a FSM and stored on the blockchain. LegalThings won the first prize in the event which included the assignment to create the first digitized Dutch law on the blockchain. The company currently employs over 15 people and has a experienced development team of 8 developers. Its software solutions are used in several industries like Law, Transfer Pricing, Real Estate, and HR. Clients include Euronext, Heineken, Velcro, Tytho, Albert Heijn and the Dutch government.
